In a process for the production of polyurethane plastics by reaction of a polyisocyanate and a polyhydroxy compound, the reaction is carried out in the presence of gold, cadmium, titanium, antimony or bismuth or a compound of one of these metals, which metals or compounds are present in the reaction mixture in crystalloidal or colloidal solution. A cross-linking agent may also be present in the reaction mixture. The metal or compound thereof may be incorporated in one of the reaction components (e.g. a polyester) during its preparation, or mixed with the polyhydroxy compound or added in admixture with the cross-linking agent. Specified metals and compounds are colloidal gold, aurochlorohydric acid, titanium tetrabutylate, antimony oxide, antimonic acid triethyl ester, bismuthyl nitrate, cadmium chloride and the tatanium complexes of disalicylal ethylene diimine. The cross-linking agent may be sulphur, a peroxide, formaldehyde or a compound containing one or more active hydrogen atoms. In Example (1) a polyester prepared by reacting glycol and adipic acid in the presence of gold trichloride is reacted with 1, 5-naphthylene diisocyanate, the product is mixed with 1,4-butylene glycol and the mixture is cast and cured by heating. Other examples employ as the hydroxy compound a polythioether, a polybutylene glycol or esters prepared in the presence of cadmium chloride, disalicylal ethylene diimine-titanium hydroxy-chloride or bismuth trichloride. Other cross-linking agents are a mixture of thiodiglycol and trimethylolpropane; 1,5-naphthalene-b -dihydroxyethyl ether.
