<p>This invention relates to high molecular weight polycarbonates prepared by reacting a sterically hindered, substituted aromatic bischloroformate with an alkali metal hydroxide in the presence of a substituted pyridine. This invention provides an industrially advantageous process for the production of high molecular weight polycarbonates using easily handleable materials and avoiding highly toxic precursors such as, for example, phosgene.</p> |
