<p>Novel propionamidine derivatives of the formula: (I) wherein X is halogen, are disclosed, as well as a process for their preparation. The process involves reacting a 3-halopropionitrile of the formula: (III) wherein X is as defined above, with sulfamide of the formula: (II) in the presence of a hydrogen halide. The compounds of formula (I) are useful intermediates in the preparation of famotidine.</p>
