A magnetic tape cassette player used in road vehicles has a head mounted on a carrier that is moved to operating position involving linear and rotary motion from single drive, and a changeover means for forward and reverse direction playing. The changeover mechanism is mounted on the side of the chassis and has a release unit that controls selective engagement of a pair of gear pinions in relation to the main gear transmission. A trigger means make the second gear to be coupled to the drive after the first gear was coupled to the drive. A control plate moves between max. forward and reverse positions to control the pinions. When the mechanism for one direction is enabled, the other is inhibited.
