PURPOSE:To obtain the title composition having a mild, rich, persistent iris-like fragrance by mixing a cis-alpha-irone and a trans-alpha-irone in a specified ratio. CONSTITUTION:The title perfume composition having an iris-like fragrance comprises a (+ or -)-cis-alpha-irone (A) of formula I and a (+ or -)-trans-alpha-irone (B) of formula II in a ratio of (95 to 75):(5 to 25). It is prepared by the isomerization of a mixture of a (+ or -)-cis-gamma-irone of formula III with a (+ or -)-trans-gamma-irone in a ratio of (95 to 75):(5 to 25), as starting raw material, in the presence of an acid catalyst such as phosphoric acid. It is desirable that the amount of the catalyst is 1/5 to 1mol per mol of the raw material mixture, the reaction temperature is from room temperature to 80 deg.C, and the reaction time is about 10 to 30hr. |
