A carbon steel with high hardenability is characterized by being composed of about 0.8% C, 0.1-0.25% Mo, 0.4-0.6% Cr, 0.4-0.6% Si and inevitably added impurites. Si induces synergistic effect with Mo and Cr, so the carbon steel needs less alloying element but doesn't lose its own properties.
