Fibre-reinforced plastic pipe 1 made of a polyester resin, of a vinyl ester polymer or epoxide, surrounded by a layer 2 retarding the production of smoke, this layer being made of a phenolic resin having a thickness of less than 20 mm, preferably from 6 to 10 mm. The layer 2 of phenolic resin is capable of withstanding clamping by clamping collars (flanges) in any desired position, over its entire length. In the case where an expanded phenolic resin is used, its density is more than 50 kg/m<3>. At least one end 3 of the plastic pipe 1 is free of the said layer 2 of phenolic resin, the said end 3 being connected to a female end-fitting 10 in a manner withstanding the tensile stress. In the pipe joint, the zone 21 between the front end 19 of the female end-fitting and the front end 22 of the layer 2 of phenolic resin is free of the said phenolic resin. Usable for transporting gas or liquids in tunnels, underground operations or chemical complexes; usable also as an element of a drainage system, of a water-supply system for fire-fighting or of a pressurised sewage system. <IMAGE>
