The invention is of interest in the field of means used for automating the editing and broadcasting of magnetic video recordings, especially for television systems. The aim of the invention is to provide a method for reading a longitudinal time code whose phases for acquiring and processing the longitudinal time code are separate and asynchronous. Another aim of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device for implementing the reading method. This aim is achieved with the aid of a reading device comprising a circuit 10 for entry of the longitudinal time code, an interrupt generating circuit 20, a sampling circuit 30, and a servocontrol circuit 50. The invention finds an advantageous application in the automatic or semi-automatic broadcasting of video recordings. <IMAGE>
