A glass pipe was developed for supplying water to laboratory rats whose dripping water loss is low and which can be easily controlled. In contrast to the previously conventional drinking systems it permits performance of drinking tests with quantitatively precise determination as well as meterable supply of test substances dissolved in the drinking water. Due to the fact that it is made from hard glass pipes it offers a high degree of breaking strength, is cost-effective and uncomplicated. In the region of the upper inflow orifice the outer pipe diameter (8 mm) was reduced by half (to 4 mm); a double, pipe-shaped glass insert secures the lower outflow end against unwanted dripping water losses. Approximately 5 cm above the outflow orifice the small pipe is bent at an angle of about 117 degrees and after cooling its inflow orifice is pushed into a rubber stopper. The connection of the novel drinking pipe with a commercially available 250 ml polyethylene bottle guarantees reliable supply of water to the animals.
