Method and device for the determination of the compactness of cohesive or non-cohesive soils

The invention relates to a method for the determination of the compactness of cohesive or non-cohesive soils, in which the soil sample is introduced into a container and is clamped down with a tamping plate, as well as a device for carrying out this method, consisting of a container which can be extended by at least one attachable extension piece, and of a tamping plate. It is the object of the invention to provide with simple means a device with which the compactness may be determined in a relatively short time, with a smaller expenditure of energy and with higher exactness, the possibilities for automisation being also considerably improved. The device according to the invention is characterised in that the container can be closed by a lid, in that the tamping plate is placed in the interior of the closed container and has an external diameter which is only slightly smaller than the internal diameter of the container, and in that the container is placed in a guide or a guide cage for the free fall of the container. The method is carried out in such a way that, after introducing the soil sample into the container, the tamping plate is inserted into the container and then the container is closed and that the container is then allow to fall in free fall once or a plurality of times onto a solid body, the container being guided vertically.
