A device for the hygienic processing of especially drinking water, comprises an UV radiation source (13, 14) in a tubular body (10) of a UV-permeable material which extends through one or more regions (7, 8, 9) arranged one behind the other in the flow direction of the water in the device through which the water to be processed flows and which are separated from one another by activated carbon filters (5, 6). The water to be processed is therefore exposed each time to germicidal UV radiation before entry in the activated carbon filters (5, 6), and this eliminates the danger of excessive growth of organisms in the region of the activated carbon filters (5, 6). Before leaving the device the filtered water is exposed to another intensive germicidal irradiation in the tubular body (10). <IMAGE>
