In the process for the production of a coloured image by stepwise application of a plurality of coloured layers from a transfer film onto an image support, a series of positive and negative film copies in the format of the coloured image are produced from a starting image. A transfer film covered by a uniform coloured layer over the entire area and, on top of the latter, a photosensitive layer is then exposed with one of the film copies, and the unexposed areas of the photographic layer and the areas of the coloured layer beneath them are removed. The monochrome part-image produced is bonded to the image support by means of a spray adhesive, the adhesive strength of the spray adhesive being adjusted so that the adhesion of the coloured layer to the image support or the coloured layers already applied thereto is greater than the adhesion of the coloured layer to its transfer film and at the same time re-transfer of coloured layers previously applied to the image support onto the free areas of the transfer film is prevented. The transfer film is then peeled off. This operation is repeated with another film copy and other coloured layers, and a spray varnish is applied to render spray adhesive layers invisible.
