PURPOSE:To obtain the subject composite material exhibiting excellent water- absorption while keeping the flexibility of textile web by heat-embossing a textile web, coating the web with a monomer convertible to a water-absorbing polymer and polymerizing the monomer. CONSTITUTION:A non-woven fiber web having a basis weight of >=20g/m<2> and made of a synthetic fiber (e.g., polyester) having a melting point of <=300 deg.C is embossed by heat-embossing (in the form of spots, spheres, stripes, etc., according to the use) and coated with a monomer convertible to a water-absorbing polymer [preferably a monomer composed mainly of (meth)acrylic acid or its salt]. The monomer is polymerized to obtain the objective water-absorbing composite containing a water-absorbing polymer firmly fixed to the textile web. Excellent water-absorption can be attained by this process while keeping the flexibility of the textile web. A composite material meeting the purpose can be produced e.g., by using the heat-embossing pattern comprising parallel stripes directing in the desirable diffusion direction of the absorbed liquid to prevent the leak of urine from a side of a diaper. |
