The ball-in-tube, gas-damped crash sensor includes a metallic sleeve (16) with an inner tubular passage (17). A spherical, magnetically permeable, electrically conductive sensing mass (18) is located in the passage for movement between first and second locations. Magnet (33) biases the sensing mass toward the first location. Magnetically permeable first and second contacts (27, 28) close when the sensing mass is moved to the second location. A magnetic permeable element (40, 41) concentrates magnet flux from the magnet through the contacts when the mass is located in the second position to retain the contacts in a closed position as long as the magnetic flux is present. This type of gas-damped crash sensor provides solid and reliable contact engagement and duration of contact engagement. This type of crash sensor eliminates problems of not triggering or late triggering commonplace among previously known crash sensors and also improves the initiating deployment of vehicular safety restraint systems.
|
