PURPOSE:To industrially advantageously obtain the aimed compound using a vanadium-silver based oxide catalyst in producing the title compound useful as a perfume, plating gloss agent or raw material for medicine, agricultural agent, etc., by catalytic vapor phase oxidation of methoxy-substituted toluene. CONSTITUTION:When a compound expressed by formula I (n is 1, 2 or 3) is subjected to vapor phase catalytic oxidation in the presence of an oxygen or oxygen-containing gas to give the compound expressed by formula II, an oxide catalyst containing V and Ag or V, Ag and an oxide of one or more kind of elements selected from K, Cu, P, Sb, Bi, Sn and Pb, preferably at an atomic ratio of V: Ag: other above-mentioned element of 1:0.01-1.0:0-1.0, especially 1:0.2-0.8:0.1-0.8 to provide the aimed high-purity compound in high conversion and yield (e.g., conversion of paramethoxytoluene at 320 deg.C reaction temperature: 95.8mol%; single stream yield of anisaldehyde: 75.1mol%) even in a case of low reaction temperature at as well as in prolonged catalyst life. |
