In a known process, a remote-control command (3) controls a television receiver (1) which, in turn transmits control instructions (C1) to a peripheral video recorder (2). The aim of the invention is to permit this type of control even when the magnetoscope is made by a different manufacturer and requires other control codes (C2). To this end, the television receiver (1) comprises a memory (M) and a translator (8), in which the codes (C2) for the peripheral appliance (2) are stored for learning purposes and the code is translated. The invention is particularly useful for television receivers connected to video recorders.
