<p>An ultrasonic device (10) for applying cavitation forces to an unwanted material is provided. The device is particularly useful for removing plaque (13) from a human artery (12) wherein a portion of the device can enter an artery and pass through the artery to the vicinity of the plaque. The device includes a solid wire (16) of titanium material, a transducer (19), a generator (22) for providing vibration energy via the transducer, and a handpiece (18) enclosing the transducer and having a tapered end portion (20) with an exponential surface of slightly concave profile. The tapered end portion is fixedly connected to an inner end of the wire. The device includes a catheter assembly (17) having a catheter tube (48) enclosing the wire and includes a container unit (50) mounted on the tapered end portion of the handpiece.</p> |
