PURPOSE: To improve the sensitivity of diamond as a thermally luminescent material and improve the thermal luminescence response to nuclear radiation dose by previously irradiating nitrogen-containing diamond with high dose of neutrons or electrons. CONSTITUTION: This method involves a step to irradiate a singlesubstituted paramagnetic nitrogen-containing diamond with high dose of neutrons or electrons, a step to capture electrons or electron holes in lattice defects in the inside of a crystal structure of the diamond by exposing an object diamond to be irradiated to radiation, a step to generate luminescence by heating the diamond, and a step to use the luminescence as a means for measurement such as the detection or the count of nuclear radiation. Here, prior to exposure of the diamond to nuclear radiation, which is to be subjected to the detection, the count, or other measurements, the diamond is irradiated with high dose of neutrons or electrons and thus the convergence of the luminescent centers is heightened and consequently the sensitivity of diamond as a luminescent material and the thermal luminescence response to the dose of nuclear radiation are improved.
