PURPOSE: To make it possible to use an electrooptic material as a thin layer and to conduct light waves in the layer by leaving the electrooptically active region in a light transmission layer as an open state and arranging prescribed electrodes in the regions made to remain. CONSTITUTION: The non-irradiated strip type regions 2, 1 of polymers which have perpendicular boundary surfaces A and B and are held polarizable by the selective irradiation from above utilizing the aid of a mask are left in the open state in the light transmission layer 2. Next, two pieces of the strip type electrodes 6 and 7 made of, for example, aluminum, are mounted at a buffer layer 3 and at least relative counter edges 6.1 and 7.1 among these electrodes run parallel. The voltage which induce non-uniform electric fields is impressed between the electrodes 6 and 7 via contacts 8 and 9 by the layers 2 and 3. The polarization of the regions 2, 1 of the polarizable polymers left in the open state are preferably locally induced by using the electrodes 6 and 7 mounted after the selection irradiation of the layer 2. As a result, the e/o (electrooptic) regions 2, 1 are better composed from the regions having the max. electric flux density. The assurance of good e/o inductive action is made possible. |
