A novel process is used to crosslink superstrong polyethene fibres to give a high gel content without the mechanical properties of the fibres, such as tensile strength and tensile module, being altered. The process is characterized in that the polyethene fibre is exposed to at least one photoinitiator and, where appropriate, a crosslinking agent, both in the vaporized state at elevated temperature, and, after that, the fibres is crosslinked by irradiating with ultraviolet light. The crosslinked fibres are distinguished in that their high strength is retained and in that they exhibit a relatively high thermal resistance and low creep rate during long-term loading. <IMAGE> |
