The coin counter for counting the inserted coin amount in a public telephone includes a coin detector (10) comprising photoelectric devices which discriminate the kind of the inserted coin, an amplifier (20), a pulse generator (30) providing the pulse corresponding to the kind of the inserted coin, a counter (40) accumulating the pulses, a display driving circuit (50), and a display (60). Each photoelectric device in the coin detector corresponds to the size of each coin like 10, 50, 100 won so that the kinds of the coin can be distinguished.
