PURPOSE:A synthetic fiber having excellent alkali resistance and liquid-retaining property at high temperature and useful for sheets used as the separators of alkali batteries, comprising polyvinyl chloride, polymethyl metharylate, polysulfone and polyvinyl alcohol at specified ratios. CONSTITUTION:(A) 20-40wt.% of polyvinyl chloride having a polymerization degree of 800-2500, (B) 20-65wt.% of polymethylmethacrylate, (C) 15-40wt.% of polysulfone and (D) 0.1-2wt.% of polyvinyl alcohol are compounded to provide the objective synthetic fiber having a fiber weight loss of <=1.5% after treated in a KOH 30% aqueous solution in a boiling state at ordinary pressure for1hr, a boiling water shrinkage degree of <=25% and a liquid-retaining degree of equation [(W1-W2)/W2]X100 of >=50wt.%. |
