A glass or ceramic prod. is formed by casting a non-aq. suspn. of particulate fumed oxide, gelling and drying. The suspn. comprises at least one oxide of SiO2, Al2O3, TiO2, ZrO2, P2O5, GeO2, B2O3, liquid. phase e.g. methanol or chloroform and at least one dispersant e.g. 3- 100 N-alcohol in an amt. insufficient to delay gelation of the suspn. for more than 48 hrs. The products have a high purity.
