The x-ray tube has an anode (30) with 2 planar surfaces (32A, 32B) extending at an angle to one another to provide a linear edge (32C) which extends perpendicular to the centre axis (33) of the electron beam 818) and to the exit direction of the latter. One anode surface (32A) faces the exit window (36) for the x-ray beam, the other anode surface (32B) angle away from the exit window, so that only the part of the electron beam (18) received by the first surface (32A) is utilised. Pref. the linear edge (32C) is offset relative to the centre axis (33) of the electron beam (18) in the direction of the exit window (36). ADVANTAGE - Reduces size of focal fleck for increased image resolution.
