Just as the patio in the case of a bungalow provides a pleasant area between house and garden, balconies on high-rise residential buildings serve as a link with nature. The utilisation of such free spaces is usually completely prevented during the cold season. Rain, snow and frost forces a retreat into the closed rooms of the house. Although permanent glazing would considerably improve the utilisation of such outdoor spaces, its value for utilisation in the summer would be highly impaired due to the hothouse climate and the separation from outdoor air. The solution to the problem provided by the innovation is based on the fact that, in terms of the method of the innovation, the predominantly transparent shut-off means for the outdoor space is arranged temporarily, i.e. only for the cold period of the year, with special securing elements (bracing load-bearing members and slide springs). Consequently, on the one hand, the known advantages of utilisation in the summer remain undiminished and, on the other hand, this results, in the cold season, not only in space-utilisation advantages, but also in the extra benefit of solar heat and a reduction in the transmission-heat loss and an improvement in soundproofing.
