A shroud seal insert (50) which fits in the upstream portion of the shroud (15), and nests against the nozzle or bullet-nosed head (12) of the portion of the sliding gate valve (3). The seal insert is a monolithic one-piece seamless member, desirably made from a compressible or friable refractory material such as alumino-silicate fibres. The seal insert is sufficiently thick so that it inhibits bonding of the shroud head to the nozzle tip. <IMAGE>
