<p>PURPOSE:To remove the residual moisture in atmospheric gas for obtaining a high purity powder of an active metal for forming a hydroxide compound up to extremely low concn. by condensing the residual moisture in the atmospheric gas at extremely low temp. to bring the condensed moisture into contact with metal sodium. CONSTITUTION:A hermetically closed container for forming a high purity powder of active metal (selected from metals of the Groups IIa, IIIa, IVa, IVb) forming a hydroxide compound is evacuated to be brought to a vacuum state and subsequently substituted with inert gas. Next, when an extremely low temp. cooling medium is brought into contact with the side wall of the hermetically closed container, the residual moisture in the atmospheric gas within the hermetically closed container is condensed on the inner wall of the container. When a rod-shaped metal sodium lump is brought into contact with the condensed moisture, the metal sodium lump acts as a solid phase getter to form NaOH and residual moisture is decomposed and removed. Further, said moisture is dissolved in metal sodium within the container under heating to generate sodium vapor which in turn acts as a gaseous phase getter to remove the residual moisture up to extremely low concn.</p> |
