In a process for producing organo-sulfur compounds, an aliphatic olefin having from 4 to 20 carbon atoms per molecule is reacted with a sulfur-containing compound selected from hydrogen sulfide and straight chain and branched aliphatic mercaptans having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms in the presence of a slightly acidic catalyst system comprising sodium hydroxide or one or more transition metals or oxides of transition metals selected from vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, nickel, coppper, and zinc; and a modifier selected from molybdenum, molybdenum oxides, tungsten, tungsten oxides and mixtures thereof; all supported on an inorganic oxide support.
