Vulcanized elastomers are made from high molecular weight linear amorphous polymers of alpha-olefins including copolymers of alphaolefins with each other and/or with ethylene, by heating the polymer at a temperature of from 180 DEG to 300 DEG C. with from 1 to 15% sulphur or a sulphur-containing compound capable of releasing elemental sulphur at said temperature, until a spongy mass is obtained, masticating the mass and after mixing it with vulcanization agents, vulcanizing the mass at a temperature below 200 DEG C. The initial heating in the presence of sulphur or a sulphur-releasing compound may be effected in the presence of a metal oxide or metal sulphide catalyst such as zinc oxide, lead oxide, or molybdenum sulphide. Prior to the addition of vulcanizing agents to the spongy mass, excess sulphur may be removed from the mass by solvent extraction. The mass may be mixed with a natural or synthetic rubber, and/or an oxidant, and/or fillers, and/or plasticizers, prior to vulcanization. Oxidants mentioned are alkali or alkyline earth metal peroxides, dinitrosobenzene, or polynitrosobenzene, or an organic peroxy compound, or a mixture of a dioxime such as a quinonedioxime, or substituted quinonedioxime, with an inorganic oxide or peroxide. The natural rubber may be smoked sheet, the synthetic rubber butyl rubber, and the filler carbon black. The polymer may be polypropylene or polybutene or a copolymer of ethylene and propylene. |
