A chemically modified polysaccharide which is obtainable from crosslinked dextrin, uncrosslinked or crosslinked dextran or uncrosslinked or crosslinked agarose, which contains alpha-glycosidic linkages and ionic components which are attached to the polysaccharide component through the grouping of the formula -CO-NH-CH2 -O- the carboxyl group being attached to the ionic component and the oxygen atom being attached to the polysaccharide component.
