PURPOSE:To eliminate a lowering of strength by providing a position detecting pattern having permeability, which is different from that inherent to a cylinder rod, to the surface part of the cylinder rod using the same material quality as said rod. CONSTITUTION:A cylinder rod 1 equipped with a detection position is formed by providing position detecting patterns having permeability difference from that inherent to the cylinder rod to the surface part thereof at an equal interval in a circumferential state. The cylinder rod 1 has the same material quality as the patterns 2. In the original cylinder rod, sufficient tempering such as high frequency tempering is applied to the surface part thereof and chromium plating is further applied to the surface of the rod. Since the pattern parts having permeability different from that of the rod are limited to a minute part of a width of 1-2mm and a depth of 1-2mm in the original rod, no adverse affect becoming a problem of the original strength of the rod is imparted.
