The exhaust gas system is for an IC engine. It has an exhaust pipe (11) of tubular cross-section comprising a central section (12) and two connecting parts (11a and 11b) joining respectively the engine (20) and the silencer (30). The central section encloses an afterburner unit (13) for the removal of harmful emissions, and is greater in dimension than the other exhaust pipe parts as well as greater in size than the afterburner, enabling the exhaust gas flow to pass through the gap so created.
