The method for thermal surface hardening using energy beams serves the purpose of producing hardened tracks, in particular slideways of work guides (plates) of machine tools. According to the invention, before the transfer of energy onto the hardened track a compensation hardened track is produced on the side opposite the hardened track in accordance with the distortion (warpage) characteristic of the component, which is a function of the energy transfer conditions. After temperature compensation, the residual distortion is measured and after comparison with the permissible values one or more further compensation hardened tracks are produced until the permissible distortion value is reached.
