The suspension for a vehicle seat, having a lower frame (11) which is mounted on the vehicle, an upper frame (12) on which the seat is mounted, a vertically extensible/contractable mechanism, for instance a pair of X-shaped linkages (13a, 13b) which is arranged between the lower frame (11) and the upper frame (12), and a flexible damping element (31) for limiting the lowering range of the upper frame (12). The flexible damping element (31) is arranged such that it lies opposite the movable end portions of a vertically extensible/contractable mechanism. A force directed vertically onto the seat is transmitted as a horizontal load via the vertically extensible/contractable mechanism to the flexible damping element (31). This leads to a reduction in an impact which occurs when the upper frame (12) is lowered onto the lowermost plane, and causes the seat to be set down gently. <IMAGE>
