A laser diode driving apparatus of the present invention detects a laser power output of a semiconductor laser diode (13) for applying a laser beam to a WORM type or rewrite type optical disk (11) with a detector (14), this detected output signal is compared with a laser power set signal by comparison means (17), the comparison output signal is modulated by modulation means (19) to recording data and the laser diode (13) is driven by driving means (22) in accordance with this modulation output signal. Since the modulation means (19) is disposed in an APC circuit for controlling the output power of the semiconductor laser diode (13), the laser power necessary for recording can be set automatically to an optimum value even when light emission characteristics of the semiconductor laser diodes are different, and the application characteristics of the semiconductor laser diodes can be enhanced and the temperature range thereof can be made broader.
