A method of operating a fuzzy controller by automatically setting an optimum membership function and a device for adjusting the fuzzy controller. The fussy controller (10) includes a fuzzy inference unit (11) and a system identifying unit (12) which receives an output quantity Y of an object that is to be controlled and an output operation quantity U of the fuzzy inference unit (11). The system identifying unit (12) then supplies to the fuzzy inference unit (11) an output for correcting the membership function.
