In the manufacture of asphalt using granulated paving asphalt, a multi-stage method is proposed. In a first input step, rock and granulated paving asphalt are fed into the mixer. The water contained in the granulated material evaporates. Since only partial quantities are fed in the first input step, the steam developing is, even in the event of flash evaporation, still manageable, so that steam extraction can be performed. A second input step, in which further quantities of rock and granular material are fed, is performed only after temperature equalisation between the hot rock and the cold granular material has taken place. Flash evaporation, the steam of which can be removed, also takes place in this input step. The method makes possible the use of a high proportion of paving asphalt without the danger of explosions as a result of flash evaporation and without the danger of the bitumen burning on the hot rock. <IMAGE>
