In a method for gripping and separating pliable, especially textile workpieces, needle-shaped elements combined in carrier bodies are moved at the same time in the direction of the workpiece and are set in rotational movement about an axis of rotation extending approximately parallel to the workpiece surface. The torque occurring on the carrier bodies or on the needle-shaped elements is measured by a torque sensor and is processed in an electronic evaluation circuit in order to detect the non-positive connection produced. Preferably, a plurality of such carrier bodies are provided on different regions of the workpiece and each have a direction of rotation directed towards the workpiece edge.
