An outboard jet propulsion apparatus, in which water is expelled as a jet at 7, has a lower plate 11 extending rearwardly from the stern of the boat which can be set at a predetermined height with respect to the boat and which accommodates the entry 9 through which water is drawn into the pump 4. The plate 11 is arranged to be continuous with the bottom of the boat and by adjustment of the brackets 14 and 15 its angle may be varied in the vertical plane. The apparatus carries a steering deflector 18 and reversing deflector 22. The apparatus may be pivotally mounted on the boat with a suitable flexible coupling to the plate or it may be permanently attached to the boat, the plate 11 forming part of the boat structure.
