Cooling the target of an X-ray tube.

An x-ray tube includes a cathode (11,12,14) which supplies electrons that bombard a target (13) to produce x-rays (16). The target (13) is supported on a rotating anode (15) which includes fins (54) covered with a high emissivity material. An envelope (10) surrounds these elements and provides a vacuum chamber in which they operate. A receptor (50) is mounted to the envelope and includes fins (53) which mate with the anode fins to enhance the radiation of heat from the rotating anode. The fins of the receptor are also coated with a high emissivity material (56). A cooling liquid is pumped through channels (57,58,59) in the receptor.
