<p>PURPOSE:To simplify the hardware without deteriorating the efficiency of encoding, by performing estimate-encoding for the high order bits and quantization for the low order bits adaptively. CONSTITUTION:An analog signal (a picture signal) is converted into a PCM signal in 8-bit at an A/D converter 1. The high order 6-bit of the PCM signal is applied to an estimate-encoder 6 and the low order 2-bit is to a quantizer 7 at a distributor 5. The estimate error signal from the encoder 6 and the output signal of the quantizer 7 are encoded with unequal or equal code in response to a mode signal from a control circuit 10 through a code converter 8 and multiplexed together with signals required for decoding such as synchronizing signals and the like. The multiplexed signal is applied to a buffer memory 9, smoothed and transmitted on a transmission line. In this case, the circuit 10 monitors the amount of storage of the memory 9 and generates the control mode signal so as not to produce overflow or underflow.</p> |
