Cigarettes (16) are selectively withdrawn from a transporter (14) transporting the cigarettes (16) to a conveyor (135) to a subsequent operating machine (103). A second transporter (211) transports the selected cigarettes (16) to a number of checking devices (230,231,232), each comprising one unit for checking a specific characteristic of the cigarette (16). The devices present independent inlets facing the second transporter and at least some of the devices have an outlet opening towards the first conveyor. The cigarettes are selectively withdrawn and fed under CPU control to the checking devices using electrovalves. The valves are located next to a conveyor belt to enable the supply of compressed air to a seat on the belt housing the cigarette. The cigarette is transferred by withdrawing air from a seat on a roller facing a resp. seat on the belt.
