A back-space editing control circuit for a recording and reproducing apparatus which first assumes an assembly state before actually assuming a recording state when an operation mode of the recording and reproducing apparatus is switched from a recording pause mode to a recording mode. The recording and reproducing apparatus using a control signal reproduced from a magnetic tape in the assembly state controls a rotational phase of a capstan motor so that information tracks formed on the magnetic tape are accurately scanned until the recording state is reached.
