Multidimensional sensor having an inertial mass composed, for example, of a mercury pearl (bead, pellet, dot) on to which the measured variable of the movement or vibration is coupled through the base (substrate) of said pearl. Since the curvature and location of the surface are determined only by surface tension and gravity, there is extreme accuracy of reproduction. A light beam is used to interrogate the reflection of suitable points of the surface, and the light signals are passed on by means of known methods, converted into electric signals and evaluated using known methods to produce signals for direction, intensity, and frequency and rate of the movement or vibration. The simple design permits integration in the cable for the purpose of avoiding the sources of error in plugs (connectors).
