The invention relates to a method for operating a rack shaft (7, 66) for piece goods (11) in which method, for the purpose of charging the shaft, piece goods are pushed into the shaft (7) from one side (15) of the shaft, the piece goods (11) in the shaft are mechanically coupled (19) to form a train and, for the purpose of removing at least one item (11) of piece goods, an item of piece goods at the shaft end is pulled so that the train of piece goods coupled to one another is moved in the direction (7) of the removal shaft end and the mechanical coupling (19) of the at least one item (11) of piece goods to be removed is then released from the train of piece goods when the next item of piece goods in the removal direction is drawn at least approximately into a specified removal position (p1).
