Sofas traditionally have a backrest with cushions arranged loosely next to one another. They may also have armrests arranged fixedly on the furniture frame. The armrests cannot be adjusted for use in some other way. In order to be able to change in a simple way the rest parts of the piece of furniture on which to lie and sit and adapt them to the specific type of use of the user, the backrest (5, 7) can be adjusted, in order to form an armrest, from a first position approximately parallel to the longitudinal direction of the lying and sitting surface (18) into a second position running transversely to the longitudinal direction of the surface (18).
