PURPOSE: To generate a scanning signal related to the optical transmittance of a paper money by providing a light source, a light receiving unit, and a moving distance detector. CONSTITUTION: A paper money 10 is passed through an illumination measuring section comprising a light source 12 and a light receiving unit 20. Moving distance of the paper money 10 is grasped by a moving distance detector 42 and transmitted by a clock pulse to a microcontroller 34. The light source 12 and light receiving unit 20 are positioned such that the region of paper money 10 to be scanned at each time can be selected as a scanning section. When a sheet- like substance is not present between the light source 12 and light receiving unit 20, light beams from LEDs 14, 16 are captured as it is by light receiving elements 22, 24 and a high level signal S is outputted. This signal S represents the absence of the paper money 10 or misarrangement thereof. When a preliminary measurement is made using a model paper currency, a user can load a desired paper money into an automatic teller machine. |
