A system for preventing an automatic transmission of a motor vehicle from downshifting when wheels of the vehicle slip. The system has a detector for detecting slipping of wheels of the vehicle. In order to detect the slipping, acceleration of a vehicle body and acceleration of driving wheels of the vehicle are detected. The acceleration of the driving wheels is compared with the acceleration of the vehicle body, and a slip signal is produced when there is a difference between both the accelerations. In response to the slip signal, the downshifting of the transmission is inhibited. The slip may alternatively be detected by compacting the speeds of front and rear wheels.
