A laterally releasable jaw of a safety ski binding for holding one end of a ski boot (12) has a binding housing (11) in which is arranged a release spring (13), arranged substantially in the longitudinal direction of the ski, which is supported at one side on the binding housing (11) and, at the other end, acts upon a sole support arranged towards the ski boot and having two lateral legs (14) and a depressor (15), in the direction away from the ski boot (12) with a release force having a substantial component in the longitudinal direction of the ski, in a manner such that the lateral legs (14), when a predetermined lateral force exerted by the ski boot (12) is exceeded, pivot out laterally about at least one substantially upright pivot pin (16) and release the ski boot (12). The release spring (13) furthermore exerts a downward-directed force component (K2) on the depressor (15), which is arranged in a vertically displaceable manner on the binding housing (11) and is pressed by the downward-directed force component (K2) against the top of the ski boot sole (17).
