Grating for a cupola or similar shaft furnace

A grating for a cupola or shaft furnace for high-temperature melting of metals is described. By means of liquid and/or gaseous fuels, the charge material which is introduced into the shaft furnace from above and has not yet melted is supported above the grating until it is heated to liquidous temperature by the combustion products flowing through the shaft from the bottom upwards. The grating consists of a tube arrangement which is cooled by a cooling medium, such as water. The tubes of the grating are covered over their entire area by a refractory material with a defined thickness, the surface temperature of the covering lying within a range above the liquidous temperature of the molten metal and below the reaction temperature of the refractory material with the resulting slag which drips through the grating.
